In the following paragraphs Swift uses understatement in order to emphasize the poverty most children live in. His attempt is quite effective here because he sheds light on the issue in a satirical manner. For instance, he states that it is a depressive memory for those who witness such poverty and miserable conditions. In a way this sabotages the image of struggles that the children of Ireland endured, thereby making the statement seem less severe than it is.

Swift uses understatement to casually discuss the impoverished life of Irish children. About a hundred and twenty thousand children are born every year to “poor parents.” The children cannot contribute in fruitful ways, and they rarely learn the art of stealing before they are six years old. With this in mind, Swift supposes Ireland’s poverty may end if Irish children were sold as food. This statement is brought up so casually to the point where it is shocking. Swift’s use of understatement is effective as it allows readers to grasp the severity of the situation in Ireland with the added emphasis at the end.

Swift utilizes understatement in “A Modest Proposal” to highlight the cruelty exhibited by many of the British in their indifferent attitude towards Irish people experiencing severe poverty. By doing so in a sarcastic, almost passive-aggressive tone, Swift effectively conveys his more sympathetic perspective on the issue, most notably with the example at the end of the excerpt in which he casually suggests cannibalism as a potential solution to the problem at hand.

In “A Modest Proposal,” Swift uses understatement to advance his subject of child poverty and its implications. By maintaining a sarcastic tone throughout the proposal, the audience is forced to look beneath the surface and underline the severity of the lack of attention and care for these kids. By not highlighting the “solution” at the end and very casually dropping the idea of cannibalism as a solution, Swift proves his feelings on the situation by providing an extreme rather than an applicable solution.

    Part 2:
In the passage ” A Modest Proposal”, author Swift emphasizes and elaborated on the issue of Irish child suffering from poverty through understatements. By using understatements Swift is asserting and confirming the idea that many children face poverty through poor living conditions. However, Swift elaboration with understatements throughout the passage gave him the opportunity to turn the story around and make it less pitiful but instead allow there to be awareness of the difficult lives these children encounter. Swift then uses understatements as a form of sarcasm that help him express his feeling on the situation. As the passage continues his understatements become effective towards the end because he is able to convey his thoughts that lead him to a proposal of cannibalism being a solution to poverty. Though it might sound at first like a controversial topic his understatements lead the reader into being open minded of his idea.

    Part 2:
Throughout the passage “A Modest Proposal”, the author Swift delivers his idea of ending poverty through cannibalism by using understatements that make his proposal sound less unnatural. Within the passage he discusses that Irish children are suffering from poverty through poor living conditions that effect their health and cause them to live difficult lives. With his understatements he is very effective because he makes the situation sound less pitiful but instead with his sarcasm it brings more awareness to the point. Overall, his delivery emphasized the struggles of these children and with his form of writing he highlights the issue notably.

    Exercise 2:

Jonathan Swift uses understatement to address how large the issue is, I think. It brings about thought because it’s used as an understatement but doesn’t seem to be one because of how large and extreme it is, especially with the numbers. Even though he subtracts a lot there still remains a lot. I think it’s effective in the sense of how it ended. The ending seems shocking at the thought of perhaps consuming or seeing a child as food. I feel like if it was properly understood it may serve as more of an impact with his use of understatement. However as I did not quite fully understand what he had written I can only assume that it was helpful while not being so certain in my words.

This is used in order to highlight the severity in how poverty is affecting people. Thus Swift does an effective job at using understatement to get his point across.

The title of this essay itself is already an example of what an understatement device is, along with its paragraphs that give it the perfect context that it wants to deal with. What he tells us is about the decadent and unfortunate situation that the Irish were going through during that time, giving us direct and even statistical examples so that we can reflect on a more concise idea of the unfortunate situation that these people were going through.

Swift uses understatement in his writing to outline how the British remain mindless to the issue of extreme poverty among Irish people. The nonchalant and casual way in which Swift displays his feelings on the matter ironically indicates the complete opposite as he subtly makes remarks that outline the severity of the situation. The understatement is quite effective here as it outlines every extremity of this condition. Furthermore, the method spoke of in which he suggests cannibalism is the greatest form of extremity to this situation.

Swift’s understatements are very effective in that he is using irony to show how big of an issue poverty really is in Ireland. It is interesting how unfazed he is when writing about this terrible issue. He is using understatements to show how normal such poverty is and to indicate how the issue has just become a mundane fact that is simply seen everyday.
